Massimo Gaudioso nasce a Napoli. Dopo la laurea in Economia e Commercio emigra prima  a Milano, poi a Roma, dove comincia a lavorare in un’agenzia pubblicitaria, la BBDO international. Dal 1983 al 1995 prima come copywriter e in seguito come sceneggiatore e regista free-lance, realizza numerosi documentari, filmati industriali, video istituzionali, spot, sigle e programmi tv per importanti aziende italiane e multinazionali, musei ed enti istituzionali. Nel frattempo frequenta i seguenti corsi e seminari: sceneggiatura (Pirro, Benvenuti, Mc Kee, Seger); regia (Loy, Michalkov).Nel 1995, con Eugenio Cappuccio e Fabio Nunziata, scrive, dirige, interpreta e produce (per la fantomatica Boccia Film) un cortometraggio in 16mm b/n, “Il Caricatore”, che vince il festival Arcipelago, il Pardo di domani e il Premio del pubblico dei giovani al festival di Locarno. L’anno dopo “Il Caricatore” diventa un lungometraggio; fuori concorso al Festival di Torino, vince il Premio Holden per la sceneggiatura e quello del pubblico, e viene selezionato al Festival di Rotterdam. Uscito in sala, ottiene il Premio Casa Rossa come miglior film indipendente italiano, la targa d’oro Anec e il Ciak d’oro come migliore opera prima, il Sacher d’oro per la migliore produzione, il premio di qualità e quello come film d’interesse culturale nazionale, e molti altri riconoscimenti. Nel ’99, sempre con Cappuccio e Nunziata, scrive, dirige e interpreta “la vita è una sola”, promosso “film d’interesse culturale nazionale”. Nel 2000 firma la sceneggiatura di “Estate Romana” di Matteo Garrone, con cui aveva già realizzato due anni prima il corto “Un caso di forza maggiore”. Nel 2001, sempre con Matteo Garrone e Ugo Chiti, scrive la sceneggiatura del film “l’Imbalsamatore”, selezionato al festival di Cannes 2002, con cui vince il premio Federico Fellini e il David di Donatello per la migliore sceneggiatura. Nel 2003 firma la sceneggiatura del film di Matteo Garrone “Primo Amore” selezionato in concorso al Festival di Berlino, e con cui vince il Premio Amidei. Dal 2003 ha lavorato a vari progetti cinematografici, tra cui:

2008 “Pranzo di ferragosto” di Gianni di Gregorio, revisione sceneggiatura e co-regia, accreditato come “direzione artistica”.
2008 “Gomorra” di Matteo Garrone, sceneggiatura. Gran premio della giuria al festival di Cannes, Oscar europeo  e David di Donatello, tra gli altri, anche per la migliore sceneggiatura.

Massimo Gaudioso was born in Naples. After obtaining a degree in Business he moved to Milan and then to Rome, where he worked for the BBDO International Advertising Agency. He first worked as a copywriter and then as a screenwriter and freelance film director from 1983 to 1995.  He wrote and directed several documentaries, commercials, TV programmes, trademarks, industrial films, public advertising videos and jingles for important Italian and multinational companies, museums and public agencies. In the meanwhile, he studied screenwriting (with Pirro, Benvenuti, Mc Kee, Seger) and direction (with Loy, Michalkov).
In 1995 he wrote, directed, played and produced «Il Caricatore» (The Loader) - a short film in 16mm, b/w - with Eugenio Cappuccio and Fabio Nunziata (for the mythical Boccia Film). This short film was awarded at the Festival Arcipelago, it won the Pardo di domani award and the Premio del pubblico dei giovani at the Locarno Film Festival. In the following year «Il Caricatore» became a feature film; not in the official competition at the Torino Film Festival, it won the Holden award for best screenplay and audience award, and it was chosen for the Rotterdam Film Festival. Distributed in cinemas, it won many prizes; among others, the Casa Rossa award for best Italian independent movie, the Anec golden Plate and the golden Ciak for best debut, the golden Sacher for best production, the quality award and it was also acknowledeged as a movie of national cultural interest. In 1999 he worte, directed and played «La vita è una sola» (Just One Life), with Cappuccio and Nunziata again. This one was acknowledeged as a movie of national cultural interest, too.  In 2000 he wrote the screenplay of «Estate Romana» (Roman Summer), a film by Matteo Garrone. Two years before, he had already shot with him the short film «Un caso di forza maggiore».
In 2001 he wrote the screenplay of «L’imbalsamatore» (The Embalmer) with Matteo Garrone and Ugo Chiti, in the official competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002; «L’imbalsamatore» will be awarded with the Federico Fellini prize and the David di Donatello award for best screenplay. In 2003 he wrote the screenplay of «Primo amore» (First Love), a film by Matteo Garrone, in the official competition at the Berlino Film Festival; it won the Amidei Award.
