Dopo essersi laureato nel 1983 in Storia del Cinema con la tesi I generi cinematografici: teoria, produzione, storia , è andato a vivere negli Stati Uniti , dove è rimasto per sette anni.

Ha lavorato come assistente alla regia/produzione in film di Jim Jarmusch (Stranger Than Paradise, Down By Law ), Amos Poe (Alphabet City ), Michael Cimino (The Year of the Dragon ), oltre che in videoclip, pubblicità, film-tv, ecc. Negli stessi anni ha realizzato i primi cortometraggi, pubblicato libri di musica e cinema e è stato corrispondente per Stereodrome , programma radiofonico di Rai Radio 2, per varie testate giornalistiche italiane, tra cui Rockerilla , Buscadero , Fare Musica , oltre che selezionatore americano per il Festival Cinema Giovani di Torino.

Tornato in Italia, nel 1991 ha girato il primo lungometraggio, Il caso Martello, presentato alla Mostra di Venezia e successivamente vincitore della Grolla d’Oro a Saint Vincent come miglior esordio nella regia.
Tra il ‘91 e il ‘93 ha pubblicato altri libri di musica e è diventato redattore della rivista musicale Rumore , a cui ha collaborato fino al ‘95.
Nel 1994 il Festival di Locarno seleziona in competizione il secondo lungometraggio Babylon (La paura è la miglior amica dell’uomo). ll film partecipa ad altri 18 festival internazionali, vince il Missing Film di Genova e il Premio Fipresci della Critica Internazionale al festival di Torino.
Dal 1995 inizia una nutrita produzione di documentari , tra cui Non mi basta mai che 1999 ottiene il premio Cipputi al festival di Torino.

Nel 2000 partecipa in concorso a Venezia con Il partigiano Johnny vincendo il premio Ragazzi e cinema , nonché il Premio della Giuria al festival di Stoccarda.
Nel 2002 il film documentario Alice è in paradiso vince il Festival dei Popoli di Firenze.
Nel 2004, il quarto lungometraggio, Lavorare con lentezza, è presentato in concorso al Festival di Venezia, dove ottiene il Premio Mastroianni per gli attori emergenti. Il film vince anche il Festival de Cinema Politic di Barcellona, il Med Film Festival, un Ciak d’oro, il premio Italian Film Fest per il montaggio e riceve tre nominations per i Nastri d’argento e due per i David di Donatello.

Nel 2007 il documentario Le pere di Adamo partecipa alla Festa di Roma e ottiene una menzione speciale all’Italian Film Fest.
Nel 2008 dirige i sei film-episodi di Quo Vadis, baby?, primo prodotto seriale di Sky.
Nel 2010 il film Io sono con te partecipa in concorso al Festival del Cinema di Roma e ottiene quattro nominations ai Ciak d'oro.

In 2004 his fourth feature film Lavorare con lentezza was presented in competition at the Venice Film Festival, where he won the Mastroianni Award for emerging players. The film also won the Festival de Cinema Politic in Barcelona, ​the Med Film Festival, a Golden Ciak, the Italian Film Fest Award for the editing and it received three nominations for the Nastri d'Argento and two for the David di Donatello.

In 2007 the documentary Le pere di Adamo took part at the Rome Film Festival and it obtained a special mention at the Italian Film Festival.
